Samsung Blackjack 2 - Review

 Sunday, January 13th, 2008

Since changing positions at work I have wanted to take advantage of my company's data plan reimbursement and wanted a way to stay on top of work emails more than I had been. I needed something that would sync with our exchange servers and, for me, that was 2 choices, either a blackberry or a windows mobile device.

I am not a fan of paying a lot for phones. After all, the last phone I got, my Nokia 6682 only cost me a penny with my new at&t (then cingular) contract. This time I knew I would have to pay some, but a small fortune just to check email wasn't going to work.

After looking around and hearing thoughts from coworkers, I decided to pick up a Samsung Blackjack 2. The phone was on sale for $99, but since my contract still had 8 months left, it would be an additional $75. The grand total was $174 for the phone. (They really stick it to you with those contracts.)

The Switch
I have enjoyed my Nokia 6682 over the last 18 months that I have owned it.
(read review here) . But it was starting to feel old and it was nice to get something shiny and new. The Blackjack's screen is much more vibrant and has a higher resolution. I have enjoyed being able to put my pictures on here so i can show people what I saw on my trip to Italy

Samsung Blackjack II compaired to the Nokia 6682

While this phone is wider than the Nokia and taller, it is thinner and the full QWERTY keypad and larger screen are well worth the additional size.

Let's get right down to it...

The Good
  • full qwerty keyboard
  • fast 3G connection
  • 2 MP camera
  • active sync©
  • GPS
  • micro SD expansion slot
  • small
  • windows mobile 6
The Bad
  • no copy paste (WM6 issue)
  • low res video
  • slow zoom feature
  • no flash for camera

Video
The video quality isn't as good as I would've liked. It isn't any better than my Nokia 6682.

GPS
The GPS works great with google maps. You'll have to be sure you have an unlimited data plan since driving around with this thing on really runs through the map tiles. That's a lot of data.

Camera Comparison
The camera on the blackjack is 2MP. Not close to the biggest on the market and it lacks a flash. The pictures look great on the phone, but once downloaded, they are disappointing. The camera won't allow you to get very close, and the zoom feature is very slow. To me, the whole point of having a camera phone is to capture the random events in life that come up. I have serious reservations about this camera's ability to capture anything before it's too late.

to use google maps on the device you have to unlock the gps reciever from the telenav software
