Italy - Day 1 - Flight And Train to Rome

 Thursday, December 6th, 2007

Here is the combined summary of the flight and train ride from the Airport. The last two hurdles between me and Rome.

The Flight
First the flight. I flew on a Boing 767 and had a window seat. At check-in there was no one sitting next to me, but when I boarded the flight, I did have a gentleman sitting next to me. He was, however, able to grab one of the 3 empty center-isle seats and that gave me the 2 seats all to myself...AWESOME!

My Chariot To Rome

My meal on the plane, Farfalle Pasta. For dinner on the plane we had 2 options, Grilled Chicken or Farfalle Pasta. I decided to get the pasta which included a salad, bread, crackers and a brownie. It had been so long since I had a full meal on a plane that I was really excited to have one again. And along with the meal there was a complimentary glass of wine. Looking back on it I should have passed on the wine because it wasn't very good. The brownie, however, excellent.

Yumm, breakfast. Even though I accidentally checked-in my sleeping pills I thought I would be able to sleep well enough. I stayed up until about 11pm EST but, apparently Mexican high school students don't understand the concept of 'volume control' because I was awoken after only 4 hours of sleep. That really didn't matter because we were given breakfast an hour later and we landed an hour after that. The question I have to ask myself at this point is..."Was I that loud on my flight to Rome as a teenager?". I sure hope not.

The decent was amazing. With the sunrise, the ocean, and the suburbs of Rome below it was the perfect way to be welcomed into the country. We landed at 7:15am local time and I'll have to say that it was probably the easiest 10 hours I've ever spent on a plane.

Sunrise landing in Rome with the coast in the background.

Discovering the Train And Going into Rome

This was probably the most nerve-wracking experience so far. Finding the trains station alone was difficult because as I was walking through the tunnel from baggage claim to the trains, no one else was. That combined with trouble readjusting my pack, my lack of confusion about where to purchase my ticket and my desire to catch the 8:35a train was enough for me.

I did, however, manage get my ticket, stamp it in the little yellow validation box and boarded the train.

The trip took 30 minutes and went non-stop to the Termini station. From there it was right into sight seeing. On to the Colosseum...
